This is the first major international exhibition analyzing cultural expressions of Pan-Africanism from the 1920s to the present. 'Projecting a Black Planet: Art and Culture of Pan-Africanism' discusses the art of the African diaspora, highlighting the aesthetic exchanges between the artistic productions of the African continent and the contributions from Black communities dispersed worldwide. While Pan-Africanism seeks transnational solidarity, the exhibition also reflects experiences shaped by unique contextual visions. MACBA proposes an itinerary structured around concepts that expand notions such as the fundamentals of Pan-Africanism, studies of blackness, representativity, the weight of religious beliefs, and the dynamics of public protests and civil rights movements. The result is a collection of pieces from varying materials and supports that showcases fine arts, music, and vernacular cultures from Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, North America, and Western Europe.
