An exploration of the trajectory, evolution, reach, and influence of Matisse on creators and international avant-gardes. The exhibition highlights a part of the immense dialogue surrounding his name in the art of the 20th and 21st centuries, from his first self-portrait to the artistic freedom of his last paintings and gouaches. Henri Matisse's art reflects a completely innovative conception of color, the critical reformulation of the painting as a pure pictorial surface, and also an idea of being "out of place" both emotionally and politically, that is, his way of expressing the break with established norms and the search for a new way of seeing and representing the world. This journey presents a wide selection of works mainly from the Centre Pompidou, where Matisse's pieces dialogue with those of other contemporary and later artists he influenced. It is divided into eight areas that showcase his trajectory and evolution, from the German fauves and Russian neo-primitivists to American painting from the 1940s.
