At the end of the 3rd century, Emperor Diocletian reorganized the territorial distribution of the Roman Empire: from that moment it would be divided into an Eastern and a Western division, each further divided into dioceses and provinces. From this territorial division, the Church began to establish itself across the Empire, including here in Tarraconense, where Tarragona (Tarraco) became the province's capital, giving rise to some dioceses that would emerge later, such as Barcino in the 4th century and Ègara in the 5th century. This territorial arrangement, with some minor changes, remained until June 15, 2004, when Pope John Paul II established two new dioceses: Sant Feliu de Llobregat and Terrassa, making Barcelona its metropolitan see and the others its suffragans. Throughout the centuries, the parish has been and remains a fundamental institution in the Church's history and in Catalan culture.
