The exhibit 'From Party Walls to Facades: A Legacy for the City - Sarrià - Sant Gervasi' highlights the often-overlooked significance of party walls—those anonymous structures that separate properties yet can become prominent due to urban planning changes. While these walls typically don’t contribute to the exterior aesthetics of buildings, they can present urban challenges that impact structural integrity and livability, as well as create visual dissonance within public spaces. To address these urban discontinuities and create new facades that blend harmoniously into the landscape, Barcelona initiated a plan for the renovation of party walls 25 years ago. As part of Barcelona's recognition as the UNESCO UIA World Capital of Architecture in 2026, the Mies van der Rohe Foundation and the City Council have launched an international competition inviting young architects worldwide to propose ideas for renovating ten selected party walls across the city's districts.
