The exhibit titled 'From Party Walls to Facades: A Legacy for the City' explores the significance of party walls—those anonymous structures that define property boundaries but often remain hidden from the public eye. While they may not contribute to the aesthetic appeal of buildings initially, urban planning changes can bring them into view, resulting in a visual disjunction in the landscape that poses structural and livability issues for affected buildings and neighborhoods. Twenty-five years ago, Barcelona initiated a remodeling plan aimed at addressing these urban discontinuities by creating new facades that harmonize with the urban landscape. In recognition of Barcelona's designation as UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture in 2026, the Mies van der Rohe Foundation and the City Council launched an international competition inviting young architects to submit designs for the transformation of ten selected party walls across the city's districts.
