The show that will make you laugh and reflect on hypocrisy and the limits of humor is back. It's a fact that theaters are full of stand-up performances, and many of you may wonder... was it necessary to create a show about a stand-up comedian? Yes, because the vicissitudes between a wacky comedian and a political candidate for mayor allow us to humorously and maliciously address very current topics. The play discusses contemporary issues such as the limits of humor, cancel culture, self-censorship, and the hypocrisy surrounding politics and society itself. The author, Xavi Morató, asks: "Have we become too puritanical? Or were we once beasts with no regard for others' feelings, and have we finally put things in their place?" The play features a comedic battle between a comedian who performs a fun yet incorrect show and a progressive politician who defends freedom of expression in all cases except this one. The controversy is served, and so is the comedy. Synopsis: "Not Even Joking" is a modern Pygmalion. The aspiring mayor Jana, in a fit of rage against her political rival, rehires Humber, a canceled comedian known for his uncomfortable monologues that cross all boundaries of humor, correctness, and self-censorship. Jana has a few hours to deconstruct the character and convince him to change a speech that offends all collective sensitivities. However, Humber will not easily yield and will also want to "liberate" her from social and political restrictions. This play contrasts two extremes in how to view the world: a politician who must follow the rules of correctness and self-censorship, and a comedian who operates outside the limits of social acceptability. Both need to captivate their audience, but with opposing methods and objectives. The tension between "looking good" and "speaking the truth without filters" will raise profound questions about freedom of expression, humor as a vehicle for truth, and the personal concessions we make to fit into social or political mandates.
