Air quality is the primary environmental risk regarding health effects, according to OMS-2021. For this reason, the European Union has developed a new air quality directive with much stricter health protection thresholds for various pollutants by 2030, aiming to reduce atmospheric pollution levels. In the coming years, we will see regulatory non-compliance with these thresholds. This does not mean we are more polluted, but that we have set a higher 'bar'. We will review the challenges we face to achieve regulatory compliance in 2020 in Barcelona, including the port area. We will examine critical pollutants, see their evolution, and provide recommendations for improvement. With Xavier Querol, researcher at the Institute of Environmental Diagnosis and Water Studies (IDAEA-CSIC).
