"L'Elisir d'amore" by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848)

The value and epic nature surround the creation of this masterpiece of the buffo genre. Donizetti instructed his librettist, Felice Romani, to provide a libretto in fourteen days, challenging their courage. Love potions are commonly used in romantic tales for centuries, but in L'elisir, there's an unexpected twist: the happy ending is not due to a love potion (which turns out to be simple red wine!), but rather a story about a love potion. When the opera starts, the heroine reads Tristan and Isolde, where a true love story unfolds after drinking a magic elixir. L'elisir d'amore is a perfect comedy where the main characters unite through their actions—not by a drink.
