Explore the fascinating Living Roof of the Museum, which spans a total area of 14,000 m² with 7,100 m² designated for green coverage. The diverse characteristics and locations of the buildings influence the types of plants utilized in these green roofs. To meet weight restrictions and to adapt to the nearby coastal environment, lightweight herbaceous plants were selected over heavy vegetation such as trees. The Living Roof features flora adapted to the Mediterranean conditions prevalent in Barcelona and serves as a natural laboratory for scientific research. Several collaborative projects focus on the effects of climate change, water quality, and biodiversity, employing small dome-shaped structures known as mesocosms to simulate various environmental conditions. This exhibition educates visitors on these innovative ecological studies while showcasing the importance of maintaining natural habitats in urban settings.
