Curated by Mercè Alsina, 'Box No. 23' by Aleix Plademunt reflects on the characteristic acceleration of the 21st century through the slowness of certain archival processes. The artist works with the photographic archive of the Maritime Museum of Barcelona, where he discovered that, as often happens in institutional archives, some materials can remain unregistered for years: invisible documents, temporarily suspended outside the administrative system. Plademunt recovers one of these cases: box 23, the last on the waiting list to be registered. It contains the donation from Juan Bautista Buades, a naval inspector and chief engineer born in 1936. The images, taken between 1964 and 1980, oscillate between intimacy and technique: scenes of daily life aboard various ships, along with expert records of damages and maritime accidents. By showcasing these images, Plademunt reactivates the visibility of these photographs and deactivates the pause that kept them frozen for seventeen years. The exhibition 'Box No. 23' is the result of a collaborative project between the MMB and the 'Panoràmic. Festival of Cinema, Photography, and More'.
