Cycle: "The Law of Gender. Valeria Sarmiento / Raúl Ruiz"

Exiled in France since 1973, Chilean filmmakers Valeria Sarmiento and Raúl Ruiz, who passed away in 2011, have each created notable works. This retrospective aims to highlight their affinities and differences. In addition to collaborating on editing and screenwriting, their filmographies often explore themes of exile, identity, and coloniality. Ironically, the subversion of gender is a common thread. Going beyond the law of gender is imperative, whether in popular cultural series (melodrama, photo novel, adventure, police, documentary) or in the social construction of gender, particularly evident in Sarmiento's films due to the attention given to women's roles. This retrospective seeks to present lesser-seen works in Spain, observe their similarities and differences, and acknowledge the formal and political power of cinema in two artists who loved narrative experimentation.
